Faye and Melissa walked down the dark main street, holding hands. As they passed by a particularly busy building, they heard a low whistle. Stopping in her tracks, Faye turned to look at the whistler.
A guy who looked to be about their age called out “Give me some of that brown sugar” and shot Melissa a meaningful glance. The shorter woman felt herself blush, appalled at the catcall.
But Faye was not having any of that. Mentally, she used magic to force the man backwards, sending him flying up against the side of the building. “Don’t ever talk to my girlfriend like that again” she warned, her voice deadly serious.
Melissa put a hand on Faye’s shoulder. “Come on Faye, he’s not worth it.” She was trying to calm down her girlfriend. “It’s not the worst I’ve ever heard.”
“That doesn’t make it right” said Faye, the frustration obvious in her voice.
“It doesn’t. But I’m a big girl. I can take care of myself when I need to.” Melissa took Faye by the hand again, pulling her away from the now obviously terrified guy. “We can’t let him ruin our night out together, and if we don’t get a move on we’ll miss the start of the movie.”
Reluctantly, Faye walked away. As they headed towards the theater, she said “I know you can take care of yourself. But I’ll always be here to take care of you, too.”
Giving her girlfriend a smile, Melissa said “I know.”
