Shauna was struggling to fall asleep. Wracked with guilt over the fact Jackie was sleeping outside because of their fight, she eventually got up from her warm spot on the cabin floor and headed outside. Seeing the other girl lying by a dying fire as the snow fell on her, Shauna ran over to Jackie and shook her hard.
“Jackie, please wake up” she begged, voice desperate. “I”m sorry I slept with Jeff. I’ll do whatever you want, please just come inside.”
Slowly, Jackie opened her eyes. She shivered, and Shauna instinctively wrapped her arms around her, trying to warm Jackie up. “Come on, let’s go inside before you freeze.”
Jackie was so out of it that Shauna basically dragged her best friend into the cabin. Shauna wrapped the warmest available blanket around Jackie, and then said “I’m sorry.” She was crying now, scared that Jackie would go into shock from the extreme cold.
Once Jackie could form sentences again, she said “I haven’t forgiven you yet. But thank you.” The rest remained unspoken for now. Jackie might not forgive Shauna today. She might not even forgive her tomorrow. But Shauna had plenty of time to work on that.
