Shauna was in ninth grade the first time she was kissed. She was asked out to the spring dance by a boy at school. And while she didn’t really want to go with him, Jackie would be going with her boyfriend, and Shauna didn’t want to feel like a third wheel.
Shauna was flipping through her closet, trying to find an outfit to wear to the dance tomorrow. Jackie sat on the bed, scrutinizing each outfit Shauna pulled out. Finally, after her best friend rejected the fifth dress in a row, Shauna gave an exasperated sigh and tossed the outfit across the room, where it joined the other rejected ones.
Grabbing Shauna by the hand, Jackie pulled the other girl towards her. Then, without any warning or indication of what she was about to do, Jackie pressed her lips to Shauna’s. They tasted like Jackie’s lipgloss. Shauna was too surprised to react, and before she had a chance to do anything, Jackie pulled away and gave Shauna a smile.
“What the Hell was that for?” Shauna asked. She wasn’t upset. Not the way she might have been if a boy had kissed her without permission, anyway. She was just shocked.
Jackie glanced down at her nails, not meeting Shauna’s eyes. “I just thought, you know, you might get kissed tomorrow. And I think your first kiss should be with someone who loves you.” A blush crept into Jackie’s cheeks as she looked back at Shauna.
“You love me?” Shauna asked.
“God Shauna, don’t read too much into it. You’re my best friend. And I just don’t want your first kiss to be with some guy who probably has no idea what he’s doing.”
The way Jackie said it, it made perfect sense for Shauna’s first kiss to be with her best friend. Plus it had been a really good kiss. Did all best friends kiss each other? Shauna didn’t think so. But as Jackie stood up and walked over to Shauna’s closet to begin flipping through the clothes herself, Shauna found herself feeling disappointed that Jackie didn’t kiss her again.
