“What the fuck is this?” Jackie asked. She was standing in Shauna’s room, waving a piece of paper that Shauna recognized as her letter from Brown.
“You went through my stuff?” Shauna said, appalled. The letter had been tucked into the drawer of her bedside table, and Shauna had only left the room for five minutes to brush her teeth before bed.
“Not the point” Jackie dismissed. “When did you get this? And when were you planning to tell me we weren’t going to be going to school together in the fall?”
Shauna sighed. Ever since she had started dating Jackie, their relationship had gotten more complicated. She’d wanted to tell Jackie about getting into Brown, but she knew the other girl would react badly at the news they wouldn’t be sharing a dorm room next year.
“I hadn’t completely decided” said Shauna. She wanted to go to Brown, but she didn’t want to be away from Jackie.
At this, Jackie’s expression visibility softened. Then she said “What is there to decide? You got in. You have to go.”
“But it means we won’t be together next year” Shauna pointed out. She knew the drive from Brown to Rutgers was roughly four and a half hours, which felt like it might as well have been the other side of the world.
“We’ll figure it out” Jackie promised. “I mean, it’s only Rhode Island.” Then she kissed Shauna. “We’ll just have to make up for it while we have time left.”
