Kate woke up in the middle of night to the sight of her girlfriend having a nightmare. Kate wasn’t a particularly light sleeper, but Yelena tended to thrash around the bed when she was dreaming. Not to mention crying out in her sleep.
Kate turned on the light beside their bed. Then she shook Yelena’s shoulder. The first time she’d woken Yelena up, the blonde hadn’t reacted well at all. But as time went on, Yelena was slowly adjusting to a life of freedom. Now Kate could wake her up without worrying about Yelena thinking she was attacking her.
“Yelena, wake up baby” she said in a soft voice. After a few moments, Yelena’s eyes snapped open and she processed where she was. Kate was sad to see the tears on Yelena’s cheeks from where she’d been crying in her sleep.
“Sorry” said Yelena when she was fully awake.
“You have nothing to be sorry for” said Kate, hugging Yelena. “Do you want to talk about it?”
Yelena considered, then nodded. “I was back in the Red Room, being forced to kill again.” Kate didn’t know all the details about Yelena’s upbringing, but she knew part of her training had involved killing girls who weren’t up to the so-called standards of the Red Room.
“You’re okay now, my love.” Kate knew Yelena still had scars (physical and mental) from the Red Room, but she was determined to make sure Yelena spent the rest of her life feeling safe and loved.
