Yelena stepped into her apartment. She’d been away on Avengers-related business and was happy to be home. But the moment she got a look at the kitchen, she felt the urge to run back out the door. It was a disaster, with dirty bowls everywhere and what looked like baking ingredients spilled all over the counter.
Yelena’s annoyance only lasted a moment, because she saw her wife sitting on the floor, crying her eyes out. “What’s wrong, my love?” Yelena asked as she sat down on the floor next to Kate. Kate was currently five months pregnant, and she cried easily these days.
Kate looked at Yelena. “I wanted to bake you a birthday cake but I ruined it by using salt instead of sugar.” She was sobbing.
Yelena melted at Kate’s words. “It’s okay” she said, wrapping her arms around Kate. She’d forgotten it was her birthday until now, thanks to traveling. “We live in New York. There are a hundred bakeries we can get a cake from.”
Kate’s sobs slowly stopped. Thankfully, Kate’s tears left as easily as they came these days. “Yeah?”.
Yelena nodded. “Why don’t you wash your face and we can check out that one around the corner? The one that has those cupcakes you love.”
Kate smiled and went off to the bathroom as Yelena wiped down the counter. Maybe this wasn’t how her birthday was supposed to go, but as long as she was with Kate, it would be the best birthday ever.
