Rose woke to the familiar sound of Lissa’s screams. After a brief moment, her dhampir reflexes kicked in and she was up and out of her bed. Crossing the room, she shook Lissa’s shoulder. “It’s okay Lissa” she said. She could tell Lissa had been crying in her sleep.

Lissa opened both eyes and looked up at Rose. “Sorry” she said, clearly embarrassed that she’d woken Rose up yet again.

Slipping into bed with Lissa, Rose settled under the covers and wrapped her arms around the other girl. Then she said “You have nothing to be sorry for.” Even without the bond, Rose knew Lissa’s nightmare was about the car crash that had killed her family. She planted a kiss on Lissa’s forehead, then said “Let’s try going back to sleep. I promise to wake you if you start having the nightmare again.”

Sighing, Lissa pressed herself closer to Rose. She hoped that with Rose’s arms around her, her bad dreams wouldn’t come back tonight. “What would I do without you to protect me?” she mumbled as she tried forcing herself back to sleep.

In the dark, Rose said “I plan to make sure you’ll never have to find out.”
